Thinking about a Criminal Justice Career?
Why not follow the footsteps of many full time police officers,
lawyers and even politicians, including a United States Congressman and take a
job as a seasonal police officer. The North Wildwood Police Department has
employment opportunities for mature adults looking for positions as a Special
Law Enforcement Officer.
The North Wildwood
Police Department annually fills 40 to 45 positions in the following job
categories:
SLEO Class II
SLEO Class I
Code Enforcement
Officer
Seasonal Records Clerk
Seasonal
Communications Officer
Application Process
Applications will be accepted through March 20th, 2009 for
employment during the summer. Applicants must be able to perform the essential
functions of police work and are subject to a background investigation that will
include a criminal history, drivers license and reference checks. Applicants are
then given an oral interview followed by basic physical testing. The physical
testing will be inline with the entry level requirements at the Cape May County
Police Academy. Also Drug Testing will be held prior to and/or
during academy training.
Approximately two weeks after the completion of the entire
interview process you will be notified whether you have been hired or not. You
will be fitted for uniforms and issued equipment. You will then report to the
Cape May County Police Academy in early May for SLEO II or SLEO I training. If
you are already a SLEO II Officer after the interview process you will be given
a starting date and a date for firearms qualifications and in-service training .

Assignments, Pay, Etc.
Pay for SLEO Class II in 2008 was $10.00 an hour. The hourly rate
for 2009 will be set sometime in early 2009. Returning seasonal employees enjoy
a modest annual increase.
Most SLEO II Officers are assigned to regular patrol as a
supplement to the existing squad structure while approximately 10 officers are
assigned to the boardwalk / bar walking beat under the supervision of a
Sergeant. Officers will be scheduled for a 42 hour week rotating schedule or a
40 hour week straight schedule. SLEO I, Code Enforcement Officers, Seasonal
Dispatcher and Seasonal Records Clerk work a straight shift.
Which department to choose? What would be better for me?
These questions are asked each year by many applicants. While
some departments may pay more money, most applicants are taking a seasonal
position for a variety of reasons. Some are exploring to see if police work is
for them, while others are using it as a stepping stone for a future career as
an attorney or for the experience for a future position as a full time law
enforcement officer. Rest assured that working at the North Wildwood Police
Department you will gain the experience necessary.
The North Wildwood Police Department is a full service police
department handling over 35,000 calls for service annually. Annually several
officers are selected to attend bicycle officer training and become part of our
elite bicycle squad.
SLEO II’s are employed from the beginning of May straight
through to Labor Day. After Labor Day we employ a reduced force during weekdays
and full deployment on Weekends during September. Employees that work through
Labor Day will receive a bonus stipend.
College Internships
The North Wildwood Police Department will assist those colleges
that have internship programs. This will include interviews, evaluations and
samples of the intern’s work product.
We urge those interested to contact their school advisors that
manage accreditation of internships.
In the past interns some colleges have offered up to 12 credits for working
during their summer break at the North Wildwood Police Department
