In New Jersey one has 6 months to make a claim on found property before the City can auction it.     If you find property, such as a ring, if it is not claimed in six months you can make claim to it.   You should make sure that the officer who you turn the recovered item into has your correct name and contact information.   You have to make petition to receive it.

Annually the department finds over several hundred bicycles that are abandoned on street corners, etc.   The city has an annual auction of bicycles which is usually in the Spring. You do not wait until an auction to see if we have  your bicycle if you think it was recovered.   Call the police dispatch at 609.522.2411 and make arrangements with the shift sergeant to view the bicycles that we have found.  Of course you will need some sort of proof of ownership.
